To understand chakras we first must recognize that we are all energy beings, systems of interpenetrating energy fields.

There are seven basic energy centers or chakras. The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit term meaning wheel. Clairvoyants who perceive these finer energy dimensions of the human system see each chakra as a spinning wheel of energy.

Chakras correspond roughly as the etheric dimensions of our endocrine glands. The soul, or etheric body, is connected to the physical body through these centers.

Each chakra represents a way of understanding ourselves and the world, a way of perceiving reality. If we suppress or block energy at any of these levels, disease will manifest in the corresponding area of the body. Different diseases will manifest as a result of blockage in any given chakra depending upon an individual’s mental and physical makeup. Also, if a chakra is too wide open disease may result, for we would not have control over the amount of energy flowing through it.

The Root Chakra

The life energy or kundalini* is housed at the base of the spine. The first chakra or root chakra serves as a trigger to release this energy. In the first chakra there would be no energy blocks. The first is like a storage bank for the kundalini. The kundalini comes up naturally twice in our lives, once at puberty and again at menopause. At puberty when the kundalini is activated it is bringing the entity into the awareness that he or she is a particular physical vibration, and the male and female chemistry comes into alignment. In addition to the heightened sexual awareness, however, it is also a time of creativity. Learn more about the Root Chakra in The Dream Book.

The Second Chakra

The second or sexual chakra is the first that can be blocked. Suppression of energy here may result from fears and guilt about sex, feeling inadequate in one’s sexual role, having sex infrequently, being in a mad marriage, feeling unfulfilled in love and sleeping around, holding on to unpleasant memories from previous relationships, or trying to lead a celibate life and not understanding how to channel the energy into higher centers. The suppression is expressed as violence, explosions of anger, prostate or female organ problems, colitis, and other physical ailments in the lower abdominal region. It is important to utilize and release the energy in the second chakra in some way, whether through masturbation, a creative outlet, sexual intercourse, meditation, or a combination of these. It is vital that we get in touch with our sexual needs and determine whether we are blocking energy in this center.

The Third Chakra

The third chakra or solar plexus is the area in which most people experience their difficulties, particularly sensitive people. This is what I call the worry chakra. It is a very vulnerable center. If this chakra is not balanced or is too wide open, a person will pick up everyone else’s energy, whether positive or negative. One will experience extreme nervousness, and may find gall bladder problems, ulcers or other stomach problems.

The Fourth Chakra

The fourth chakra or heart center is the first of the higher creative centers. This is the center of the Christ spirit, or unconditional love for oneself and one’s fellow. It is a beautiful level through which one experiences unity with all life. But it has a dual problem.

If it is too wide open, you will pick up all the suffering and the pain of the human condition, being unable to detach and gain a perspective on it.
The ideal is to be open and channeling energy from this center, but perceiving from the more objective third eye chakra.

The Fifth Chakra

The fifth chakra is associated with higher creativity and clairaudience (psychic hearing or perception of finer vibrations), and is easy to block through tension. Blocks here manifest most readily as tension in the back of the neck, often resulting in backaches, headaches and eye-strain. Rheumatism and arthritis are a direct result of blockage across the neck and shoulders. Throat problems also result from suppression of the fifth center.

Expressing your creative abilities, communication with yourself and others, are important to the proper functioning of this chakra center.

The Sixth Chakra

The sixth chakra, also known as the third eye, is not a contributor to much illness. If a person has been concentrating for long hours he or she may experience a buildup of tension between the eyes, resulting in sinus headaches or eyestrain, although usually this is a result of blockage of the fifth chakra.

The third eye merges into the crown or seventh chakra after a person has been meditating for a while, and the two are as one center.
The third eye is associated with the opening of true mystic potential and spiritual knowledge, seeing with the one eye or truth. When one has learned to direct energy through this center it can be a powerful healing beam, stronger than a laser.

The Seventh Chakra

Also known as the crown center, the seventh chakra represents the union with the God self. Pictures of saints and religious teachers often show a ring of light around the head, seen by poets, artists and clairvoyants, which is the emanation of energy from the merger of the sixth and seventh chakras. This center is not associated with blockage and disease.

Kundalini
*  There is one life energy, or God force, whether you call it the Holy Spirit, universal mind, psychic energy, sexual energy, love, or the kundalini. I use the term kundalini because that is how I have been taught by my guidance. This kundalini or life force is housed in all of us at the base of the spine. This is our infinite reservoir of spiritual energy. When we begin to direct it to higher energy centers of our body, we begin to expand our consciousness and recognize that we are spiritual beings.
